Eye Cleaning

Ear and eye cleanings are both often overlooked when it comes to basic grooming routines.

However, your dog's ears and eyes are vital sense organs that should receive proper care. This is especially true for eyes in breeds with long facial hair, such as poodles, bichon frises, and yorkies.

Basic tips

  • Use a damp rag and wipe under your dog's eyes regularly.

  • If eye discharge is not cleaned on a regular basis, it can cause browning tearstains or even mats in the facial hair.

  • All dogs at some point, will have debris in their corner eye, or "eye boogers". However, some breeds have a narrowing of the their tear duct that causes the eyes to run almost constantly. For these breeds, you should clean their eyes daily.

  • There are special products that are made to remove brown tearstains. Consult your veterinarian if they recommend using these with your dog, and what brand to use.

Safety

  • Do not use soaps, only a warm damp rag or cotton ball

  • Take care to not wipe directly over the surface of the eye

  • If you suspect your dog is experiencing pain or discomfort, or has eye issues, please consult your veterinarian.

If you have any questions about eye cleaning or have concerns about your dog's eye health, please contact your veterinarian.
